Touring Japan in sightseeing railways is always pleasant. “Choo choo!” When the train slowly exited from the station the scenery from both sides of the windows gradually transformed from a line of neat Japanese-style bungalows to breathtaking scenic paintings where you see mountains, seas, woods and flower fields. I still remember how ecstatic I was when I knew the new SAPHIR ODORIKO express train would debut on March 14th 2020. The train will run between Tokyo to the Izu region, passing through numerous local attractions. In addition to being a popular hot spring spot in Japan, Izu has also attracted public attention in recent years because of its highly acclaimed geopark. With its in-depth charms integrating nature, culture and history, Izu is definitely a first choice for vacation.

The SAPHIR ODORIKO express train echoes the theme around its destination – Izu, showcasing the magnificent natural scenery of Izu region in every aspect. With the train body painted in cyan blue, it symbolizes Izu’s high-altitude sea; with a white line drawing from the tip of the train to the roof demonstrating how the Izu beach shines in the sun; adding the use of gray colour on the side based on the black lava rocks on the Jogasaki coast. All cars are equipped with skylights to contrive a spacious feeling, allowing passengers to fully immerse in the great views outside.

The train is also the first JR East line to introduce The Premium Green Car, with genuine leather seats with free swivels. There is also a cafeteria car with an open kitchen, serving soy sauce ramen selected by chef Zaiyu Hasegawa of DEN, a Michelin two-star restaurant. You can choose to enjoy the dishes directly in the cafeteria car or in your private compartment.

The Kadowakizaki Suspension Bridge on the Jogasaki Coasti is a must-visit place for Izu.

Izu is the perfect place to rest up for a day and slow things right down. Taking the SAPHIR ODORIKO express train, you can get off near the Jogasaki Coast, Kawazu and other stations, simply stroll leisurely along the alleys and savor the cultural essence of the region.

Located at the tip of the Izu Peninsula, Kawazu is blessed with an amiable climate with flowers blooming in all seasons and well known for its cherry blossoms flourishing from early February to early March. The Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival is held every year, adding flamboyant colours to the entire town. Carnations, roses and irises are also iconic flowers of Kawazu.

The train will pass along the coastline of Shimoda, where the ocean and sky seem to meet at the horizon, forming an unforgettable scenery.

Another famous scenic spot in Izu is the Jogasaki Coast, which was formed about 4000 years ago through the cooling of lava in a volcanic eruption. Its magnificent 9-kilometer coastline and natural walking trails are the best for hiking. Among them, there is a 23-meter long and 48-meter high Kadowakizaki Suspension Bridge startling tourists in their every step. However, it is also an excellent observation deck. You can enjoy a remarkable 360-degree view from the Kadowakizaki Lighthouse, overlooking the Izu Seven Islands and Amagisan.

The best way to end this journey is staying overnight in Shimoda Hot Spring, which is the most anticipated part. Shimoda is famous for its amazing number of hot springs. There are many exclusive hot springs for hands and feet in the city for tourists to enjoy a warm healing time.
